When I started as crochet designing that was ME. But I have discovered one thing that got me my big breakthrough as a crochet designer! And I want to share this with you, so you too can create designs that sell!

I am offering a free challenge called ‘Find your unique crochet design style’, to help designers (to-be) like you, start creating designs that others can’t wait to get their hands on!

The last time I did this challenge was April 2024 and I’m not sure when I will host it again, so don’t wait too long to join!

For me has been a discovery, because I thought that I could NEVER BE ABLE TO DESIGN A PATTERN. And thanks to the tasks you suggested in the challenge, I REALIZED THAT I AM. Once I took the pen, I just started to draw without thinking, in an easy, fluent and natural way. WHAT A DISCOVERY!! Now, the next step should be to transform the draw into a fact, choose colours, choose and count stiches, etc. I haven't done it yet, and it's a big challenge for me. But now, I FEEL MORE CONFIDENT. And definitely, all around us, we are full of inspiration if we pay the right attention. I found combinations of colours even in a flight!

The challenge has taught me to be MORE FOCUSSED on how to present my ideas and also to find a space in the market where I feel comfortable and where I feel I can offer something a little bit different. And YOUR CONSTANT ENCOURAGEMENT AND ENTHUSIASM have pushed me to carve out some time each week to work on my ideas and make some more steps forward. I've ACTUALLY FINISHED MY FIRST SAMPLE and I'm working on writing up the pattern now. With other ideas fizzing about in my head!

After listening today, I've gained some good insights. The most important one is that if my head is full, there is no or limited space to get my creativity flowing. And it's true: I've started working less hours at my day job since the beginning of this month, and I already feel and see the effects! Less stress and more space in my head for creativity, resulting in A LOT OF NEW IDEAS and plans (and finally time to do something with it!). Thank you for providing this insight, ANOTHER PIECE OF THE PUZZLE FALLS INTO PLACE FOR ME. And you're right about walking outside and in nature. I know that it is really good for both my physical and mental health, but sometimes I just forget about it or am focused on other things. So I am going to do that more often!

I’ve read all of them though and listened to two audios. I’m going to listen to the other ones today! I’ve already had some GREAT INSPIRATION and realizations and it has also MOTIVATED ME to apply the same to my other creative endevours. For me it’s all about making choices and have a CLEAR FOCUS and not wanting to do it all. STICK TO WHAT I LOVE MOST and not be distracted by what others do.

Biggest take away from day one: don't be afraid, take your time. I am good, I CAN DO THIS, my patterns are wanted.

Thanks, you are very inspiring and I have been trying to find something I truly CAN do, and I crochet almost every day, because it helps me mentally, but there are periods of time where I can't, and that is ok too. THIS CHALLENGE IS REALLY HELPFUL, and helping me see that EVEN WITH A DISSABILITY IT'S POSSIBLE

Hey crochet designer (to-be), is this you? Because this was actually me...

Do you ever scroll through Instagram, seeing all the beautiful and innovative crochet designs from the designers you LOVE and think to yourself, I wish I could be a professional crochet designer as well?

Do you have a book full of ideas, but it seems like your design style goes all over the place?

Do you long to begin your new and exciting crochet design journey, but every time you start with a new design you’re overwhelmed with all the possibilities? The design combinations are literally ENDLESS and choosing between them makes you feel stuck! So in the end you might make something, but you don’t really like it. And you might even feel like you’re not good enough.

Or maybe one day, you do decide to go for it. You released a few crochet patterns. But almost nobody likes or comments on your release (let alone buys the pattern) and you get discouraged. And worse yet, insecure.

Back in 2014 when I started designing I really didn’t know what I was doing. My designs were all over the place, because I simply liked EVERYTHING. I even tried to combine crochet, knitting and sewing… As a result, I didn’t have a lot of followers and people weren’t really making my designs.

I knew instinctively I needed a clearer direction. something to tie my designs together. I just didn’t know what it was...

2014: My very first design, combining knitting and sewing

2016: Two years (and no sales) later... My big design breakthrough

You are where I was at...

2016 was my breakthrough year. I had just read the book All the light we cannot see. THIS. WAS. IT. A combination of books and nature was the key to my unique crochet design style.

With that book as my inspiration I designed the ever popular Hotel of Bees shawl (almost 10K patterns sold and counting) and gave me the direction I so desperately needed.

More importantly: I finally loved what I created and had the confidence to actually ask money for my patterns!

What is a Unique crochet design style?

  • look at it as your crochet design signature, a combination of things that you absolutely love and that others love from you
  • something that sets you apart from the rest
  • something your customers can recognize comes from you

Why it's important to create with your Unique crochet design style?

  • when you design with your recognizable style, customers that bought from you previously will more likely buy your patterns again, which creates a loyal customer base and a loyal customer base is the foundation of reliable crochet design income and thus a successful business ❤️
  • when you create unique designs, you stand out in the crowd, making it more likely to get your designs seen and patterns bought

Creating with my unique crochet design style got me my big breakthrough!

  • My sales went up
  • My Social media following grew
  • I got asked all the time to collaborate with yarn stores or magazines. I even had to say no to most of it, because I was still working full time back then as well
  • I got in the Ravelry top 5 with almost every design I published after that
  • It even attracted a contract with the big yarn brand Scheepjes!
  • It ensured I could make the decision to work as a crochet designer full time

That's why I know:

Many beginning crochet designers think that when they choose a specific design direction, they will limit their creativity, they think it sounds boring and they will only focus on what they CANNOT design anymore. And that is just backwards.

Because it’s actually the opposite.

I guarantee you your favorite designers don’t feel limited by their design options for a minute!
